| Abstract-
-
The goal of the Center for Surgical Systems and Technology (CISST) is to develop techniques and technology that will fundamentally change the operating room of the 21st century. The center has been organized to focus on two broad system thrusts: surgical CAD-CAM and surgical assistance.
-
In this talk, I will briefly overview the work going on in CISST, and then focus more specifically on some of our recent work on surgical assistance. Here, the goal is to develop methods to augment the physical and sensory capabilities of the surgeon during the course of surgery. Specifically, I will describe areas of application in the eye, throat, sinuses, and thorax. For each application, I will describe a set of technological and scientific problems that we are solving. These include the development of novel interventional devices, the creation of methods for creating augmented displays of the surgical field, and algorithms for recognizing surgical intent.
