  • Industry/International Standard AdoptionJPEG XR / HD Photo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_XR Official JPEG XR Announcement from the JPEG Group: http://www.jpeg.org/newsrel24.html Both concepts of multiplierless transform design via the lifting scheme and pre-/post-filtering are on full display in Microsoft HD Photo, a still-image compression algorithm and file format that has been widely distributed along with the current Windows Vista and the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. HD Photo has been under consideration by the Joint Photographic Experts Group for a JPEG standard, titled JPEG-XR, to potentially replace two older standards JPEG and JPEG2000 in the near future. At the most recent JPEG meeting in January of 2009 in San Francisco, JPEG XR advanced to draft international standard balloting, entering the final phases of standardization and freezing the specification for implementers. The advantage that JPEG-XR has over previous standards is that it provides high-dynamic-range image encoding while requiring only integer operations (without any division) for both compression and decompression. JPEG-XR is hardware-friendly, offering image quality comparable to JPEG2000 while its computational complexity and memory requirements are comparable to those of the old JPEG standard. The entire transformation stage in JPEG XR codec, which includes a base integer transform called Photo Core Transform (PCT) and an additional pre-filtering operator called Photo Overlap Transform (POT), is one particular solution of the larger framework developed in the DSP Lab at JHU from NSF-funded project CCF-0430869 Adaptive Pre- and Post-Filtering for Block-Based Communication Systems. This is an excerpt taken directly from the official ISO/IEC announcement: "The JPEG committee is hosting a meeting to provide a special preview of the standard and discuss possible approaches to raw file compression. JPEG XR offers the potential to give cost and compression benefits to users producing high-quality, high dynamic-range images. The committee invites collaboration with camera manufacturers and other digital photography stakeholders by attending the meeting to be held in Tokyo on 18 and 19 February 2009."
