Project Title:

NEUROMORPHOMETRY IN SCHIZOPHRENIA

Abstract:

Precisely defining the characteristics of neuroanatomical abnormalities in schizophrenia (i.e., volume losses, shape deformations and altered asymmetries) can provide critical evidence for determining the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. More recently, there has been substantial interest in determining whether such neuroanatomical abnormalities show progressive changes over time. However, improved methodologies for neuromorphometiy are needed for such experiments. During the first funding period of this project, we made further substantial progress in the development of high dimensional brain mapping (HDBM). In this renewal application, we show that HDBM can be used to measure brain structure volumes, shapes and asymmetries with excellent reliability, and that HDBM can be used to detect abnormalities of the hippocampus and cingulate gyrus that discriminate matched groups of schizophrenia and control subjects.

Brain Subvolume Image Data for Validation of Segmentation:

10 subvolumes are available in two formats: ANALYZE (7.5) and MATLAB formats.

The MATLAB data was generated on Linux but can be read in by other *IX systems.

Explanation of MATLAB format:

  • mrinz - nonzero mri intensity voxel
  • mannz - corresponding hand segmented voxel
  • coord - voxel coordinate identifier
  • ic - x coordinate: if ic value is zero set to xdim
  • jc - y coordinate: if jc value is zero set to ydim
  • kc - z coordinate: if kc value is zero set to zdim
  • xdim, ydim, zdim - voxel resolution

Hand segmentation labels:

  • CSF = 1
  • GMA = 3
  • WMA = 4
